Based on a survey done with a large number of American responders, the sample was a random sample of all U.S. adults living in households with telephones: 
This nationally representative, anonymous, household telephone survey was conducted to explore the distribution of privately owned firearms in the United States, as well as firearm acquisition, disposal, and storage in households with guns.
The survey was originally held to gather data on gun ownership but many more questions were asked. I selected the data that had something to do with homes. Combining these and running it through Processing unique houses were generated, homes for the anonymous people in the questionnaire.
